Armenian Diaspora Commissioner Addresses Challenges in Syria and Lebanon

The Armenian diaspora in the Middle East faces significant security and economic challenges. Zareh Sinanyan, High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, plans to visit Syria in April to address these issues. Over 200 Syrian-Armenians have arrived in Armenia since December, while conditions in Lebanon remain critical. Sinanyan’s office aims to provide support and resources for those wishing to relocate.

The Armenian diaspora communities in the Middle East, particularly in Syria and Lebanon, are currently facing significant challenges related to security, economic hardships, and social issues, as stated by Zareh Sinanyan, High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs. He highlighted the unstable situation in Syria and announced plans for a visit in April, following a period during which many Armenians sought evacuation amidst the Aleppo offensive.

Sinanyan reported that while evacuations were logistically impossible at the time of the crisis, over 200 Syrian-Armenians have relocated to Armenia since December. The conditions in Lebanon remain dire, and his office is actively engaged in assisting Armenians who wish to leave due to severe economic difficulties. His organization is collaborating with partners to address their urgent needs.

Furthermore, Sinanyan emphasized the importance of facilitating a dignified relocation process to Armenia; failure to do so may drive compatriots to seek refuge in other countries. He expressed a desire for the development of an emergency fund to better support the Armenian communities in need.

The dire circumstances faced by the Armenian diaspora in the Middle East necessitate increased attention and support from the Armenian government. Through focused initiatives and partnerships, the Diaspora Affairs office aims to assist those in Syria and Lebanon, while stressing the importance of creating viable living conditions to retain the diaspora within Armenia.
