On the occasion of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to uphold human rights. Ambassador Omar Zniber emphasized Morocco’s proactive role in the initiative on the Convention against Enforced Disappearances with Argentina, France, and Samoa, announcing two key national commitments.
Morocco will host a regional symposium to encourage ratification of the Convention and plans to classify enforced disappearance as an independent crime in its legal framework. These initiatives were shared during the session’s agenda item 02.
In collaboration with Paraguay and Portugal, Morocco seeks to bolster the International Network of National Mechanisms for Human Rights Implementation. This effort follows the 10th Glion Dialogue on Human Rights, leading to the Marrakech Policy Framework aimed at enhancing national mechanisms.
Additionally, Morocco intends to promote women’s roles in diplomacy by proposing a draft resolution to institutionalize International Women’s Day in Diplomacy celebrations in Geneva. The ambassador noted that Morocco is enhancing its human rights legal framework.
Significant reforms are underway, including revising the Family Code to reflect cultural identity while aligning with international human rights standards. Drafts of the Penal Code and laws on criminal procedure are undergoing productive discussions among stakeholders.
Moreover, Morocco has enacted an organic law governing the right to strike and has implemented alternative sentencing law, crucial for addressing contemporary penal policy needs. This comprehensive approach aims to align Morocco’s laws with international human rights standards.
