Aalto HAPS successfully conducted a stratospheric connectivity test in Kenya on behalf of Space Compass and its partner, NTT Docomo. This test, which took place on March 3, involved connecting a 4G mobile device to the Zephyr High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS). The company claims this achievement marks the first wireless connection from a fixed-wing HAPS flying at altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet, facilitating a telephone call from Kenya to the United Kingdom.

During the trial, the Zephyr was equipped with a connectivity payload that enabled direct communication with both a mobile device and a ground-based gateway in Kenya. Aalto also performed various tests to assess the performance of the connectivity system by measuring throughput and signal quality, as enabled by Kenya’s supportive regulatory environment for the HAPS vehicle’s launch and landing.

NTT Docomo, a prominent Japanese mobile operator, along with Space Compass, which is a joint venture of NTT and SKY Perfect JSAT, is part of the HAPS Japan consortium that will invest $100 million in Aalto in 2024. The collaboration aims to develop a roadmap for commercial HAPS services that are anticipated to be launched in Japan by 2026.

Shigehiro Hori, the co-CEO of Space Compass, spoke positively about the significance of HAPS in enhancing Japan’s communications infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas and in response to natural disasters. He noted that the connectivity demonstration via Aalto’s Zephyr is an auspicious beginning for 2025 and emphasized the collaborative efforts to facilitate entry into the Japanese market.
