Prakash Karat Critiques Modi and Trump for Promoting Far-Right Ideologies

Prakash Karat of CPI(M) condemns the Modi-Trump alliance for promoting far-right ideologies. He characterizes the Modi government as a ‘Hindutva Corporate regime’ with neo-fascist tendencies. Karat warns against India’s alignment with aggressive US policies and critiques the Congress party’s response to the CPI(M)’s stance against the BJP and RSS.

Prakash Karat, the CPI(M) Politburo coordinator, criticized the collaboration between the Narendra Modi government in India and former US President Donald Trump, asserting that both are promoting ‘far-right’ ideologies. At a recent state party conference, he characterized Trump as an imperialist committed to American dominance and condemned the Modi administration as a ‘Hindutva Corporate regime’ showing ‘neo-fascist’ characteristics.

Karat expressed concerns regarding India’s close relationship with the United States, suggesting it aligns India with oppressive regimes and pointing to arms sales and support to Israel during its conflict with Palestine. He argued that India’s participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), alongside the US, Japan, and Australia, is a strategic maneuver to counter China, highlighting potential risks of isolation from developing nations as US aggression under Trump increases.

He described the government’s external policies as indicative of its character, stating, “the path this government is taking… is a reflection of its character, which we have termed as a Hindutva Corporate regime that is displaying neo-fascist characteristics,” as reported by PTI. Karat also accused the Congress party in Kerala of undermining CPI(M)’s critique of the BJP and RSS by challenging the use of ‘neo-fascist’ terminology, alleging that they engage in ‘cheap politics.’

Furthermore, Karat pointed to the tragic deaths of several CPI(M) members, purportedly inflicted by RSS activists in Kerala, as evidence of true resistance to the BJP in the region. He elaborated, stating, “It is modified, has elements of the old fascism, but has incorporated other features like neo-liberalism, and in India, the Hindutva ideology of the RSS is a distinctive feature,” which elucidates why they adopt the term neo-fascism.

Karat cautioned that failing to confront neo-fascism could lead to its evolution into full-fledged fascism. He compared Trump’s conduct to 19th-century imperialists, highlighting alleged attempts to control areas such as Greenland and the Panama Canal, and even suggesting Canada could become the 51st state of the US.

In summary, Prakash Karat criticizes the alliance between India and the United States under the Modi government and Trump, labeling it as a promotion of far-right ideologies. He warns of potential isolation from developing nations due to the aggressive stance of the US and the neo-fascist characteristics of the current Indian regime. Karat’s remarks also seek to defend the CPI(M) against accusations from the Congress party while highlighting the dangers of unchecked neo-fascism. His historical comparisons emphasize the serious implications of such ideologies on modern governance.
