The report highlighted that at least 24 individuals were killed during two separate attacks in October of the previous year and January of the current year in the Mbomou and Haut-Mbomou prefectures. Many of these victims were reportedly executed without due process.
The armed group cited in the report, WTA, has historical ties to another faction known as Azandé Ani Kpi Gbé, implicated in the aforementioned attacks. Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, reported that these groups, including those associated with national armed forces, have perpetrated severe human rights abuses, particularly targeting Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees.
Al-Kheetan also noted instances of sexual violence, forced labor, torture, and looting. Emphasizing the necessity for accountability, he reiterated the UN’s commitment to collaborating with local authorities to promote human rights and combat impunity.
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged clarity regarding the connections between the armed groups and the military, advocating for transparency and, if necessary, disarmament.
