Sudan has filed a case against the UAE at the ICJ, accusing it of complicity in genocide against the Masalit group due to its support for the RSF. The UAE denies these claims, amidst reports of significant casualties and displacement in the ongoing conflict. The situation prompts urgent international appeals for resolution and humanitarian aid.
Sudan has initiated legal action against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging complicity in genocide against the Masalit ethnic group in West Darfur. This action arises from claims that the UAE has provided significant financial, political, and military support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, which facilitated atrocities such as murder and displacement since at least 2023.
The accusations include facilitating various human rights violations—genocide, murder, theft, rape, and forced displacement—stemming from the UAE’s assistance to the RSF. Sudan’s legal filing requests that the ICJ impose immediate emergency measures, compelling the UAE to prevent acts classified under the Genocide Convention, particularly those threatening the lives and well-being of the Masalit group.
In response, the UAE has firmly rejected these allegations, including those reiterated at the UN Security Council, asserting that it has not supplied the RSF with weapons or ammunition. The conflict between Sudanese forces and the RSF has escalated since April 2023, resulting in over 20,000 deaths and displacing 14 million people, according to UN reports. However, research conducted by U.S. universities estimates the death toll to be significantly higher at around 130,000.
Amidst the ongoing violence, international and UN appeals for a resolution are intensifying, highlighting an impending humanitarian crisis marked by widespread famine and severe food shortages as the conflict spreads across 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
Sudan’s case against the UAE at the ICJ underscores serious allegations of complicity in genocide and human rights violations stemming from the support of the RSF. While the UAE denies these allegations, the situation in Sudan remains dire, with significant casualties and displacement reported. The escalating conflict has provoked urgent international calls for intervention to avoid a worsening humanitarian catastrophe.
