On Wednesday in Windhoek, Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba announced the launch of the Hage Geingob commemorative banknote, honoring the late former president for his significant contributions to the nation. Geingob passed away on February 4, 2024, during treatment for cancer. Mbumba praised him as a “nation builder,” emphasizing that the unique banknote serves as a tribute to Geingob’s impactful vision for Namibia.

The commemorative note, valued at 60 Namibian dollars, will serve as both a collector’s item and legal tender. Bank of Namibia Governor Johannes Gawaxab highlighted Geingob’s 60 years of dedication to the nation, from his exile to leading an independent Namibia. He stated, “Thus, the number 60 carries profound symbolic meaning, reflecting his extensive commitment to the country throughout these decades.”

Gawaxab also announced plans for a new series of banknotes and coins set to launch in June, featuring updated security measures to enhance modernity and resilience. Moreover, in 2020, the Bank of Namibia had issued a commemorative 30 Namibian dollar note marking the country’s 30th independence anniversary, showcasing vital figures in Namibia’s leadership to represent peace and stability.

The introduction of the Hage Geingob commemorative banknote represents a significant homage to the late president’s enduring impact on Namibia. The unique note, along with future currency updates from the Bank of Namibia, signifies ongoing efforts to honor the nation’s historical legacy and modernize its financial instruments.
