On Tuesday, the Indian National Congress criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to visit Manipur amidst ongoing ethnic tensions in the region. The party claims that Modi’s continued absence is a deliberate avoidance of the issue, particularly as ethnic violence has plagued Manipur for over a year, prompting repeated calls for his presence.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed his discontent via Twitter, stating, “It is Frequent Flier time and the PM is off to Mauritius now. But even after President’s Rule has been imposed in Manipur the situation remains tense.” He further emphasized the political neglect by asserting that the Prime Minister’s delay in visiting Manipur is insulting to its residents.
Currently, Manipur is under President’s Rule following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in early February. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently reviewed the security situation, directing security forces to facilitate the movement of vehicles. The ethnic clashes, which erupted in May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki communities, have resulted in over 200 fatalities.
In legislative matters, the Lok Sabha is set to discuss a statutory resolution regarding President’s Rule in Manipur, accompanied by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s presentation of the Manipur budget for deliberation.
