Ximena Motta Hernandez, hailing from Colombia, recently concluded the English Language Program at VCU and is now a master’s student in public administration at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. In her words, “I wanted to experience an American public university … and it has been nice being in the heart of Richmond.”
Colombia is characterized by its resilient and hardworking populace, which exudes positivity despite facing social and economic challenges. This South American nation boasts a variety of landscapes including mountains, oceans, and jungles, along with the world’s finest coffee, rich biodiversity, and a vibrant musical culture. Hernandez encapsulates Colombia’s essence by stating, “We are a country with open arms to the rest of the world – and the ‘danger’ is the desire to stay once you are there.”
A cherished memory for Hernandez was her flight arrival in America, where she marveled at Virginia’s vast treetops from her window, further solidifying her impression of Virginia as a romantic destination. Additionally, Hernandez expressed surprise at VCU’s numerous daily activities and the robust support system available for students in various organizations and offices. She finds the peaceful ecological environment of Richmond, Virginia, coupled with its proximity to beaches and major cities, to be an unexpected delight.
Hernandez’s significant achievement in Colombia includes spearheading a project aimed at providing internet access to small, remote towns.
