Petrobras Explores Opportunities in Argentina, Advances in Colombia and Africa

Petrobras is pursuing opportunities in Argentina and advancing its projects in Colombia and Africa. The firm sees potential in gas from Vaca Muerta, while also exploring oil reserves in Argentina. Additionally, it is preparing an offshore gas development in Colombia and initiating exploratory drilling in Africa.

Petrobras, the Brazilian state-run oil company, is exploring potential opportunities in Argentina while simultaneously advancing projects in Colombia and Africa, as stated by the firm’s head of exploration and production, Sylvia dos Anjos. During the CERAWeek conference in Houston, she highlighted that gas from the Vaca Muerta region in Argentina could be particularly valuable, as a pipeline connection among Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil would facilitate its transport.

In addition to its interest in gas, Petrobras is also considering oil prospects in Argentina. This initiative is part of the company’s strategy to replenish its oil reserves internationally, especially given the challenges faced in obtaining environmental licenses for drilling in Brazil.

In Colombia, Petrobras is currently preparing a development plan for an offshore project where significant natural gas reserves, estimated at 6 trillion cubic feet, have been discovered. The company is awaiting governmental approval to proceed, with the project potentially supplying 13 million cubic meters of gas per day to Colombia via pipeline.

Meanwhile, in Africa, Petrobras anticipates drilling exploratory wells in an oil block in São Tomé and Príncipe between July and August. An additional drilling operation is planned for the second half of the year in another area located in South Africa, according to Ms. dos Anjos.

Petrobras is actively seeking opportunities in Argentina while expanding its operations in Colombia and Africa. The company’s strategic focus includes leveraging potential gas supplies from Argentina and overcoming domestic drilling challenges. Petrobras is making significant strides in offshore projects in Colombia and exploratory initiatives in Africa, indicating a robust international growth strategy.
