The confirmed cholera case involves a 55-year-old woman who exhibited severe watery diarrhea and sought treatment at the Opuwo District Hospital on March 2, 2025. A stool sample was collected the following day, and laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of Vibrio cholerae on March 10. The patient has since received treatment and has been discharged in a stable condition.
Nangombe assured that the situation is being addressed urgently, with public health measures already implemented to halt further infections. Initial investigations indicated that the patient had no recent travels outside of Namibia and had not participated in large gatherings which could facilitate disease transmission.
Efforts are being made to identify the source of infection and prevent additional cases of cholera, an acute diarrheal disease primarily spread through contaminated food or water. Without timely medical intervention, cholera can result in severe dehydration and even death; however, with appropriate treatment, fatality rates can be reduced to below one percent.
In accordance with World Health Organization guidelines, a confirmed case with local transmission is classified as an outbreak, requiring immediate public health action. Nangombe encouraged the public to engage in preventative measures such as boiling or treating water before consumption, practicing thorough hand hygiene, and ensuring proper food storage. Individuals presenting symptoms such as severe diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration should seek immediate medical attention.
