Petrobras Secures Approval to Clear Corals for Foz do Amazonas Drilling

Petrobras has received approval to clear corals from a drilling vessel for the Foz do Amazonas region. The authorization allows for preparations to be made for potential drilling pending a necessary exploration license. Despite previous setbacks, the company expresses optimism regarding its drilling plans in the Equatorial Margin area.

Brazilian state-run oil company, Petrobras, has recently received authorization from the environmental agency to remove corals from the drilling vessel intended for the Foz do Amazonas region. This approval, granted to a request made on February 10, allows the company to proceed with preparations for the drilling operations, pending the acquisition of a required exploration license.

Due to concerns that the corals could become invasive if relocated, their removal will occur under strict supervision by Ibama, Brazil’s environmental agency. Once the corals are cleared in Rio de Janeiro, the vessel is set to navigate to the Equatorial Margin, identified as a prime location for oil exploration efforts by Petrobras.

If the license is granted, Petrobras aims to initiate drilling operations within the year. However, the company has previously encountered challenges, as Ibama’s technical team recently advised against granting a drilling license for a well located in the northern section of the Equatorial Margin, an area geologically comparable to the regions where Exxon Mobil is currently operating extensive fields.

At the CERAWeek conference in Houston, Sylvia dos Anjos, head of exploration and production at Petrobras, expressed optimism regarding the acquisition of the necessary license. Last May, Ibama restricted the offshore drilling license for the Foz do Amazonas area due to environmental issues, but Petrobras has appealed the decision, and a conclusive ruling from Ibama is pending.

In summary, Petrobras has gained approval to clear corals from its drilling vessel for operations in the Foz do Amazonas region, contingent upon obtaining an exploration license, which the company is hopeful to secure. The environmental implications of coral relocation are being carefully managed by Ibama. After facing earlier setbacks, Petrobras remains optimistic about its future drilling objectives in the promising Equatorial Margin area.
