UNITEL and Ericsson Modernize Angola’s Network for Future Connectivity

UNITEL and Ericsson have embarked on a network modernization initiative in Angola that will enhance connectivity. The upgrade includes the implementation of dual-mode 5G Core technology, allowing UNITEL to offer customized services and support high-speed applications. This collaboration promises to transform the telecommunications landscape, improving services that facilitate economic growth and development.

UNITEL, in partnership with Ericsson, has initiated a comprehensive network modernization project aimed at improving connectivity throughout Angola. This upgrade is anticipated to enhance both Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services, which are essential for the country’s economic advancement and for supporting high-speed, low-latency applications.

The modernization leverages Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure solutions to modernize UNITEL S.A.’s core network. This innovative architecture integrates 4G and 5G technologies on a single platform, allowing for tailored service offerings via network slicing, exposure, and edge capabilities as well as superior voice and data services through a 5G standalone (5G SA) network.

Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core combines Evolved Packet Core (EPC) with 5G Core, utilizing cloud-native, microservices technology that facilitates the transition of legacy 2G and 3G voice services to 4G and 5G. This development empowers UNITEL to provide real-time communication services across various access networks, greatly enhancing service delivery.

A significant milestone was achieved with a successful trial data call on a live 5G Standalone network, demonstrating the capabilities of 5G technology. This trial signifies a crucial step forward in UNITEL’s objective to offer next-generation 5G services, including advanced features like network slicing.

Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, remarked on the collaboration, saying, “Our partnership with Ericsson marks a transformative moment for Angola’s telecommunications sector. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network that will drive socio-economic growth and advancement across the country. With Ericsson’s cutting-edge solutions, we are confident in delivering an exceptional customer experience.”

The strategic enhancement of UNITEL’s network will enable a range of services, including Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, 5G Voice, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), as well as applications that require high-speed and low latency. This initiative is poised to significantly improve connectivity and facilitate economic progress in Angola.

Majda Lahlou Kassi, Vice President and Head of Ericsson West & Southern Africa, expressed commitment to advancing 5G technology in Angola, stating, “We are dedicated to enabling a fully connected Angola through 5G technology, driving innovation, and accelerating the digital economy. Our advanced solutions will help UNITEL meet the growing demand for smart devices and data usage, bringing innovative technologies that open up new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike.”

With over two decades of partnership, UNITEL and Ericsson have collaborated on Core Network, Radio Access Network, and Billing solutions. This recent modernization effort aims to optimize automation benefits while enhancing the overall 5G customer experience, thus providing trustworthy, secure, and high-caliber communication solutions.

The collaboration between UNITEL and Ericsson marks a significant advancement in Angola’s telecommunications capabilities. Through the modernization of UNITEL’s network, enhanced services such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, and 5G deliver improved connectivity essential for the country’s economic growth. The successful trial of 5G technologies ensures that Angola is well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for data and smart device usage, driving innovation and socio-economic development.
