The Independence Armwrestling Challenge in Accra marked a grand celebration of Ghana’s independence, with significant victories for Ghanaian athletes. On March 16, during the Independence Armwrestling Challenge held at Center Point Mall in Accra, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, expressed enthusiasm for the high-performance competitions. The event, organized by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), celebrated Ghana’s independence and recognized the nation’s achievement of 41 medals at the 2023 African Games.
In the female +80kg category, Ghana’s Grace Minta showcased her exceptional skills, defeating competitors from Nigeria, Benin, and Togo to secure the gold medal. Her teammates, Florence Boakye and Afia Kumah, also performed admirably, winning silver and bronze medals respectively and ensuring a clean sweep for Ghana.
In the male categories, Wisdom Abromakyi, a medalist from the African Games, triumphed in the 65kg category, besting Daniel Acquah and Benin’s Amoono Stephen. Additionally, Joshua Yeboah from the Chicken Wing Club emerged as a new star, dominating the 90kg category and overcoming seasoned pullers from neighboring countries.
The event garnered attention from several dignitaries, including Mr. Kofi Adams and Dr. Kofi Addo Agyekum, Vice President of GAF. Other notable attendees included former Minister for State Enterprises, Mr. Joseph Cudjoe, and Mr. Dickson Kyere Duah, MP for Berekum West, among others.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, GAF President, expressed pride in the event’s success, stating, “I am thrilled to see the growth of Armwrestling in Ghana and Africa as a whole.” He acknowledged the dedication of athletes, coaches, and officials and praised the GAF for hosting a world-class event.
