Peru’s President Boluarte Calls for Unified Action Against Crime

President Dina Boluarte called on business leaders in Peru to unite against crime and delinquency by investing in 47 projects under the “Works for Taxes – Alliance for Security” initiative, totaling S/1.6 billion (US$439 million). The initiative focuses on prison construction, police station establishment, and enhanced security measures. On Tuesday, President Dina Boluarte urged Peru’s business leaders to collaboratively combat crime and delinquency by investing in 47 significant projects under the “Works for Taxes – Alliance for Security” initiative, with a total investment of S/1.6 billion (approximately US$439 million).

President Boluarte highlighted the plan’s potential impact, stating, “We are aware of your commitment to the country, and we call on you to be a single fist against delinquency and crime by investing in any of the 47 projects—ideally, in all of them.” The proposed projects include the construction of a new prison in the Cusco region, enhancements to Challapalca and Lurigancho prisons, and improvements in security systems in strategic facilities.

The initiative also aims to build police stations in vulnerable areas, procure technology for criminal investigations, implement video surveillance, and enhance community policing efforts, including equipping patrol vehicles and training security personnel. Boluarte emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration to achieve these goals.

She noted, “Everything contributes to building a safer Peru; besides, the public and private sectors can and must come together to achieve it.” Following previous efforts, she highlighted recent successes against crime, including capturing various criminal organizations.

In her address, Boluarte announced the launch of the “Alliance for Security,” aiming to unite efforts to strengthen security. She assured that the results of her administration would be compared favorably with those of previous governments.

The President called for societal consensus against violence, emphasizing that peaceful dialogue is essential for meaningful change. She asserted, “Let us continue advancing on the path of generating confidence in the world so that more investments can come to the country, while also giving confidence to national investors…” Furthermore, she proposed a formal discussion regarding the death penalty for violent offenders, urging the political class to take this matter seriously.
