The US has lost seven MQ-9 Reaper drones and an F/A-18E warplane since March 15 during military operations against Huthi rebels in Yemen. The incidents coincide with an escalation in Huthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, further complicating regional security and maritime operations.
Seven MQ-9 Reaper drones, each valued at around $30 million, have been lost in Yemen since March 15, according to a US official speaking anonymously. The losses are part of an intensified air campaign against the Huthi rebels, who have been targeting shipping in the region. The US has increasingly relied on these drones for both reconnaissance and offensive strikes as tensions have risen.
Compounding the situation, the US Navy reported the loss of an F/A-18E warplane that slipped off the USS Harry S. Truman into the Red Sea during a towing incident. A towing tractor was also lost in the mishap, which injured one sailor. The aircraft, valued at over $67 million, was part of a fleet that is actively engaged in operations against the Huthis.
The Navy’s incident follows another loss of an F/A-18 from the Truman less than six months ago due to a friendly fire incident. Despite these losses, the Truman continues to operate in the region where the US has been striking Huthi targets almost daily since mid-March, resulting in over 800 targeted strikes and the elimination of many rebel fighters, including leaders.
The Huthi rebels have stepped up attacks on international shipping, claiming to act in support of Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The increased aggression has disrupted maritime traffic through the Suez Canal, vital for global shipping, leading many vessels to divert around Africa’s southern tip, incurring significant additional costs.
Since March, the US has ramped up military operations against the Iran-backed Huthis, with strikes initiated under the Biden administration following the rise of tension and violence in the region.
The United States has faced significant losses in drone and aircraft due to ongoing operations against Huthi rebels in Yemen. With seven MQ-9 Reaper drones lost in a short period and a warplane that fell off an aircraft carrier, military efforts continue despite these setbacks. The increased Huthi aggression continues to threaten vital shipping routes, drawing considerable international concern.
